General Pediatrics Q&A

What is general pediatrics?

A general pediatrician specializes in childhood health and wellness. Your child’s health care needs change as they move from infancy to childhood to adolescence, and Valley of the Sun Pediatrics offers a full range of health care for children.

The team provides well-child exams, preventive care, and treatment for conditions that include:

  • Acute illnesses
  • Allergies
  • Burns
  • Chronic health conditions, including diabetes
  • Corneal abrasion and foreign bodies in the eye
  • Lacerations
  • Injuries including fractures, sprains, and strains

Your pediatrician is your first point of contact for meeting your child’s health care needs. If they have complex health problems or suffer a severe injury, your pediatrician can refer them to a specialist as needed.

When should my child visit the pediatrician?

Take your child to the doctor any time they’re sick or injured. Along with essential acute care, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends regular well-child checkups as your child grows.

Children should have regular checkups every few months from birth to 30 months (2½ years). Beginning at age 3, your child should have annual exams with the pediatrician until they’re 19.

These routine appointments help prevent illness, track your child’s growth and development, and build trust between the doctor, your child, and you. The pediatrician also does physical exams for school and sports.

Let the pediatricians at Valley of the Sun Pediatrics help you raise a happy, healthy child. To learn more about our pediatric services, call the office nearest you today or book an appointment online.
